Although my pulse slowed considerably over winter, I have been working on a few projects; some of which are near completion, others which will emerge later this year. Among those that are finished:
New Rupert Herries and Friends gig: Singer-songwriter Rupert Herries (that’s my Dad) has a gig coming up in March at the Seckford Theatre in Woodbridge, Suffolk. Rupert will be playing piano alongside fellow Small Town Bullies musicians Will Barlow and Alex Lamont on drums and sax respectively, the brilliant Nick Parry on bass and cello, and me on trombone (and bass when Nick’s on cello). To promote the event, I gave the poster of the previous gig a slightly more bloodied look.
The Apples – The Power: Snap’s ‘The Power’ has been given the live old school hiphop treatment courtesy of The Apples, on a new 12″ single coming out soon on Freestyle Records. I was asked to design the label, for which I did a mash-up parody made up of the Apples’ own logo and Snap’s original parody of Stax Records’ logo. I think this is post-retro irony or something? Or post-ironic nu-postmodernism? Something like that
Echoes of Blackburn Meadows Audio Walk: I’ve been working with cultural geographer Jennifer Rich on the visual design associated with her Sheffield-based audio walk project, which is still in its early stages. It’s centred around the perimeters of the old Blackburn Meadows power station in the Meadowhall area of the city, the site of the recently-demolished ‘Tinsley Towers’. Jennifer is collecting stories from people who lived and worked in Sheffield during the ‘Golden Era’ of electricity (the 30s to the 50s) as well as anyone who remembers the station in more recent years before its demolition. I put together the website at sheffieldelectricity.com for more info on the project, and will expand it to accommodate people’s stories and parts of the archive once the collection grows substantial enough. We hope to have a prototype installed by this summer, all being well. Read an article about it here.
That’s it for now!
